Q: How much fat is there per Wonderbar? A:Nuts are the only source of fat in Wonderbars, with each bar containing more than an ounce of nuts. An ounce of nuts (roughly a small handful) contains 13-18 grams of fat. The fats that nuts contain are comparatively healthy mono-and-polyunsaturated fats. These fats are essential for regulating blood cholesterol; they lower the harmful LDL cholesterol in the blood and increase the beneficial HDL cholesterol that protects against heart disease. Researchers at Loma Linda University found in a 1992 study that people who eat nuts at least five times a week were half as likely to have heart attacks or disease than people who rarely eat nuts.* Fats from nuts also increase chemicals in the body to leave you feeling satiated.
Q: Do Wonderbars contain sugar? A: Desire Tree International uses no refined sugar in its Wonderbars. The carbohydrates that are listed in the nutrition facts are derived from two sources: dried fruits and honey. Fruits contain dietary fiber and nutrients such as potassium, folate, and vitamin C, all of which are essential for overall health.
Many factors influenced our decision to use honey in our initial line: in addition to its being an ideal binding agent for our dry ingredients, honey imparts a moist texture to our bars. Being the only food that naturally does not spoil, it helps keep Wonderbars tasting fresh for one year. Honey is free of fat, sodium, and cholesterol; it is also rich in antioxidants and contains almost two dozen metabolism-enhancing antioxidants. Honey also contains various nutrients-vitamins, minerals, and amino acids-that aid in digestion, stimulate the metabolism, and nourish the skin and hair. Furthermore, honey is a good complement to the nuts in Wonderbars: when frequently consumed, its LDL cholesterol-lowering properties can efficiently work. Wonderbars are made with local (Texas) honey, which is beneficial for people with seasonal allergies.
While honey is somewhat safer for diabetics than refined sugar because it enters the bloodstream more slowly than refined sugar, we plan to be sweet to our customers with low-glycemic needs: our upcoming product line for diabetics will use agave nectar in place of honey.
Q: What is the shelf life of Wonderbars? A: Wonderbars have a shelf life of one year. Wonderbars can be either stored in a cool, dry place or refrigerated.
Q: Can children eat Wonderbars? A: Yes. Wonderbars are a healthy snack and are popular with most children: they are a good substitute for candies and snacks with preservatives, high-fructose corn syrup and other artificial colorings and additives which can cause hyperactivity in children. When children are introduced to healthy foods at a young age, they will be more likely to make healthier dietary choices later in life.
Q: Are Wonderbars energy bars? A: Yes and no. Wonderbars are not like other energy bars that typically contain high amounts of protein, added vitamins and minerals, caffeine, and other herbal energy-enhancing ingredients. Because they contain a variety of nuts, Wonderbars give natural energy and sustenance to the body. Seven of the eight flavors in our initial line contain between three and eight grams of protein per bar; the Almond Protein variety contains twelve grams of protein per bar.
Q: Where are Wonderbars made? A: Wonderbars are made at Desire Tree International's facility in the eastern region of Dallas, TX.
